Plastic Pollution - The Plastic Problem

Plastic pollution can be explained as an accumulation of plastic products in the atmosphere that adversely affects the environment that we all live in. Plastic pollution represents a huge crisis across the world today. This plastic problem requires global support if we are going to achieve a meaningful solution. 

Types of Plastic Pollution

The plastics polluting our environment today are as diverse as the products created. In general, we can split plastic pollution by size into three main areas: Microplastics, Mesoplastics and Macroplastics.

Microplastic Pollution

Microplastics are defined as any plastic particle less than 5mm in diameter. It is their size that makes microplastics so dangerous to life on earth as their particles are small enough to become waterborne.

These tiny plastic particles are being found in increasing quantities in our oceans which, unfortunately, is having a huge knock-on effect on our marine life. The UN recently released a study that estimates the quantity of microplastic particles in our oceans at 51 trillion. To put that in perspective, that is 6,700 times the population of the earth, or 500 times the amount of stars in our galaxy.

Multitudes of microplastic particles are being ingested by marine animals and, as they cannot be digested, are built up in their system. These plastic particles are then passed up the food chain; affecting hundreds of different species until they reach the world’s apex predators: humans.

Microplastic particles have been found in many products that humans consume, including; tap water, honey and beer, and therefore unsurprisingly have been found within humans themselves. The effect on our health is still uncertain, however, considering many plastic products contain hazardous additives, it’s unlikely to be positive.

Mesoplastic Pollution

Mesoplastics is a category of plastics that falls between micro and macroplastics. Their particle size is typically around 5mm and is normally a transitional stage during the deterioration of macroplastics to microplastics.

Macroplastic Pollution

Macroplastic pollution is defined as plastic particles or objects greater than 5mm in diameter that have been released in various ways into the environment. Just like microplastics and mesoplastics, macroplastics are having a huge impact on the food chain across the globe.

Macroplastic pollution represents a huge environmental problem and is, in fact, a major source of both microplastic and mesoplastic pollution. As plastic products are subjected to erosion, microscopic particles are released into the environment. According to a report produced by the EU, between 69–81% of microplastic pollution is caused by this process.

This is where our intervention can hugely impact the growing global problem. Along with a reduction in our global plastic production, plastic recycling can play a massive role in reducing the impact plastic products are having on the world.

Less than a third of plastics produced in Europe are recycled, with the rest ending in landfill after its initial use.
